Having droopy eyelids can make you look tired, fatigued, and unapproachable. It becomes more apparent over the course of time as the skin continues to droop further down. It may even cause functional issues such as vision impairment.
There are a number of different factors that may cause the skin around the eyelids to develop a droopy appearance. A few of them include nerve damage, trauma, and the natural aging process. Fortunately, there’s a surgical procedure that can help solve the issue of sagging eyelids, and it is known as a blepharoplasty.
What is Blepharoplasty?
A blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that is designed to correct bagginess in the lower eyelids and excess skin in the upper eyelids. It is an excellent solution for people who want to improve the look and function of their eyes.
The Procedure
The patient is administered an anesthetic prior to the procedure. Once the effects of the anesthesia sets in, the surgeon starts by making a small incision along the crease of the eyelid. The incisions are quite small and made in such a way that they are almost invisible.
The surgeon then removes excess fat and tissue and repositions the existing tissues. The remaining skin is then tightened and once all the necessary corrections are made, the surgeon will close the sutures.
Certain people opt for blepharoplasty in order to get rid of the bagginess under their eyes. In such cases, the surgeon makes an incision along the inside of the lower eyelid. Extra fat and tissue is removed, and the skin is sutured.
Before the Procedure
Prior to the procedure, it is important to talk to an experienced plastic surgeon during an initial consultation. Prospective patients should discuss their goals and expectations from the surgery. It is also wise to provide the doctor with a full medical history in order to ensure candidacy.
Patients will be required to refrain from smoking and taking painkillers such as aspirin or ibuprofen during the weeks leading up to the surgery. These medications are blood thinners and they may cause complications during the surgery.
Patients will be given surgical instructions to follow prior to the surgery. These instructions may include stopping the use of certain medications, tobacco, and alcohol. It’s important to follow these instructions as it can make a difference in how well the surgery goes.
After the Procedure
Immediately after the procedure, patients are likely to observe some redness and swelling around the treatment area where the surgery has been performed. This is a temporary side effect of the surgery and will subside gradually. The time for complete healing varies from person to person. Barring any complications, patients are likely to start recovering around two weeks after the surgery..
Patients are recommended to refrain from participating in any vigorous activities during the recovery period, especially those that may put a strain on the eyes. It is also important to keep your eyes properly protected from the sun due to their sensitivity while recovering.
