Pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing can take a toll on a woman’s body both mentally and physically. For those mothers who want to restore or improve their post-pregnancy body, Dr. Garramone offers the Mommy Makeover. This option combines procedures such as breast augmentation and a tummy tuck into a single surgical procedure.
Mommy Makeover – Breast Augmentation
Immediately after pregnancy – often during lactation and nursing, a woman’s breasts can swell and become significantly larger. This swelling results in stretching of the skin, and sometimes the skin doesn’t shrink back to its original state. Breast tissue itself can also lose volume after pregnancy (referred to as postpartum atrophy or ptosis). The combination of these two factors results in a larger amount of skin holding a smaller volume of tissue and a woman may be left with breasts that sag or appear “deflated”. Unfortunately, exercise cannot alter the appearance significantly – only a breast augmentation procedure can.
Mastopexy, a breast lift, is a procedure that raises and reshapes sagging breasts. This procedure can be combined with implants for patients requiring volume augmentation.
Mommy Makeover – Tummy Tuck
Another issue that can result from pregnancy is the permanent stretching of the abdominal skin, and sometimes even the separation of the two abdominal muscles – which can leave a permanently visible gap between them. This gap in the musculature can result in pain and discomfort when exercising or lifting objects. Stretched skin results in scarring and stretch marks that may resist all topical (surface) applications to lessen their appearance. Fortunately, these issues can be successfully addressed with abdominoplasty, more commonly called a tummy tuck.
A tummy tuck sculpts the abdominal area when an excess of sagging skin has accumulated due to major weight loss and/or changes after pregnancy. In a ‘tummy tuck’, the abdominal “six-pack” muscles are tightened and loose skin is tightened over the front of the abdomen. Liposuction is also performed in the majority of cases involving excess fat deposits.
A woman’s relationship with her body is a very personal issue, Dr. Garramone and his staff fully understand this. If you simply wish to combat the physical changes caused by pregnancy, a Mommy Makeover may benefit you in multiple ways.
